Viet Nam, Cambodia discuss waterway transport

27/10/2007 -- 10:01 PM

Phnom Penh (VNA) – Officials from the Vietnamese and Cambodian transport sectors have discussed how to increase cooperation in waterway transport, including the transit by ships from third countries via Viet Nam to Cambodia.

During their meeting in Phnom Penh on October 25, the two sides agreed to join hand in accelerating waterway transport activities, particularly on Cambodia’s Tonle Bassac – a tributary of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River.

Immediately, Cambodia and Viet Nam will discuss the reduction of checkpoints on the two countries’ rivers and plans to open more local ports to raise loading capacity.

In 1998, the two countries signed an agreement on waterway transport, which, however, has not been fully implemented due to late approval by the Cambodian National Assembly. Consequently, waterway transport activities between the two countries mainly occur on the Mekong River and transits by third-country ships via Viet Nam to Cambodia are unavailable.--Enditem
