02/11/2007 -- 9:45 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The ASEAN Bankers Association (ABA) is an important channel to strengthen the links amongst the bloc’s member countries, Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem said.

Deputy Prime Minister Khiem, who doubles as Foreign Minister, made the remark while receiving ABA’s President, Wee Ee Cheong, in Ha Noi on November 2. Wee Ee Cheong is on a visit to Viet Nam to attend the 37 th ASEAN Banking Council Meeting of the ABA.

President Wee shared Deputy Prime Minister Khiem’s opinion about the need to map out measures to bring into play the outcomes of the congress, which was hosted by the Viet Nam Bankers Association (VNBA) on November 1-2.

He noted that investors from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have set Viet Nam as a target and said he hoped that Viet Nam will continue to create favourable conditions to facilitate the operation of ABA members in Viet Nam .

The ABA , established in 1976, currently has 10 members. Viet Nam joined the organisation in 1995, with the participation of 49 VNBA member banks. To date, the ABA has provided training for more than 800 bankers.

ABA aims to boost economic growth of ASEAN member countries through bolstering the development of the banking and financial systems within the bloc.-Enditem
