Catfish fill coffers with cash

04/11/2007 -- 10:43 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Catfish exports have topped a year-on-year revenue growth of 41 percent, according to Viet Nam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

Over the past five years catfish farming in the Mekong Delta has doubled to more than 3,600ha of water surface and supplied almost half a million tonnes a year for export-oriented processing.

An Giang province, Viet Nam ’s largest catfish supplier, reported a total catch of 120,000 tonnes valued at 320 million USD, representing a year-on-year growth of 62 and 60 percent respectively.

Experts expect the Mekong Delta will almost triple the water area for catfish farming to 10,200ha by the decade’s end and produce up to 800,000 tonnes a year.

The Mekong region now earns more than 736 million USD from catfish exports, representing a seven-fold increase since 2002.

VASEP forecasts the national catfish export revenue will hit 1 billion USD this year due to Viet Nam ’s firm foothold in 75 overseas markets and stable market prices. Catfish currently trades at 2.7-3.5 USD per kg.-Enditem
