Viet Nam works to gain market share in logistics services

08/11/2007 -- 8:16 PM

Hai Phong (VNA) – The Transport Ministry plans to develop sea ports and shipping facilities, push up the training of personnel and the IT application in order to develop logistics services, a new industry for domestic businesses.

The ministry’s plan aims to correct the path that Viet Nam has been leaving its logistics market vacated for foreigners.

According to the Viet Nam Maritime Administration, domestic shipping businesses can only be able to transport 20 percent of the country’s volume of imports and exports, and the remaining market has been left for those from other countries.

Almost all 800 domestic providers of logistics services are small-scaled with poor capital, technology and personnel. Thus, in fact Viet Nam has no business that is able to cover A-Z logistics services and only acts as sub-contractors for foreign companies.

Besides, the underdevelopment of shipping infrastructure, sea ports, storages as well as of the legal system are other obstacles for the logistics services’ development.

Many famed logistics firms in the world have penetrated into the Vietnamese market to gain big profits and impose pressure on domestic businesses.

Duong Chi Dung, CEO of the Viet Nam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) said: “Joining the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Viet Nam ’s shipping sector begins implementing its bilateral and multilateral commitments on logistics. Wholly foreign invested companies have been allowed to join the market, creating a fierce competition.”

Dung stressed that it’s time for Viet Nam to develop a strategy and proper policies for its own logistics services.-Enditem
