WHO provides emergency relief aid to central Viet Nam

30/11/2007 -- 8:50 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The World Health Organisation will contribute 55,000 USD to provide sterilised water and assist in clean water supply to flood-ravaged central provinces in Viet Nam .

The WHO is assisting the Vietnamese Government in disease prevention efforts and the distribution of emergency relief to affected localities.

Recent floods caused by heavy downpours have devastated Viet Nam ’s central region with provinces from Quang Binh to Phu Yen and central highlands Gia Lai provinces being the hardest hit.

Local communities are suffering from serious food and drinks shortages and polluted water sources and environment which pose great risk of acute diarrhea, malaria, skin infections, eye diseases and other illnesses. The floods have also damaged more than 220 medical clinics in the region, limiting local response to the diseases. Experts say it would take the central region several years to overcome the consequences.-Enditem
