Bird flu outbreaks confirmed in Germany, Benin

16/12/2007 -- 8:52 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Two chickens in the northeastern German state of Brandenburg have tested positive for the deadly H5N1 bird flu virus, according to news report on December 16.

The birds were kept with nine other chickens in the Oberhavel region, northwest of Berlin, sources from Brandenburg state's Agriculture Ministry said.

After several of the birds died, the remains of two of them were sent for testing and a federal lab confirmed that they were infected with the H5N1 strain of flu.

The remaining birds were culled and poultry kept within a three-kilometre radius was being checked for the virus.

Meanwhile, the West African country of Benin has also confirmed bird flu outbreaks in the two suspected sites in the southern coastal tip of the country.

According to the agriculture ministry, more than 240 chickens had been slaughtered and burnt during their disinfection of the two suspected sites in the commercial capital of Cotonou and in Adjarra earlier this week.

Agriculture Minister Roger Dovonou said samples from the birds had been sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health laboratory in Padua, Italy and test results had confirmed they were infected with the deadly H5N1 strain of the virus.

Several countries in Benin's immediate vicinity have been hit by the virus with one person having died from bird flu in neighbouring Nigeria. Togo also reported cases of H5N1 in poultry in June.- Enditem
