Droughts hit 1.35 million people in southern China

18/12/2007 -- 7:32 PM

Beijing (VNA) - Droughts described as the worst in 50 years in southern China have left more than 1.35 million people short of fresh water.

More than 1 million residents in Guangxi region and nearly 250,000 others in Guangdong province have been impacted by droughts since September, the China Daily reported.

Between November 5 and December 10, Guangxi recorded just 0.5 mm of rainfall, the lowest since 1951.

As one of the country's major sugar cane producers, Guangxi's crop this year is expected to be down by about 2.7 million tonnes as 75 percent of the total cropland being affected by droughts.

The Guangxi authorities said it will spend 2.29 billion yuan (310 million USD) on irrigation projects this winter and next spring to provide water to people throughout the region.

Many reservoirs and rivers in the Hunan and Jiangxi provinces which neighbour Guangdong have also dried up as there has been little rain since September.-Enditem
