Soc Trang (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang has so far this year built nearly 13,000 houses to the tune of 77 billion VND (4.81 million USD) for poor Khmer ethnic families.
The funding was sourced from the Programme 134 that was designed by the Government to support poor households as well as donations raised by local, agencies, organisations and people.
Nguyen Huu Tam, head of the provincial Committee for Ethnic Minorities, said apart from housing, Soc Trang has also aided the local Khmer families in job placement and agricultural production.
More than 21,000 Khmer households were provided loans worth 181 billion VND (11.3 million USD) in total to expand agricultural production in 2007, he said, noting that close to 4,000 families escaped from poverty, reducing the rate of poor households to some 30 percent,
Tam added that the province has set a target of 8,000 new homes for the poor next year.-Enditem
