"Combined effort needed to defeat drugs, vice"

20/12/2007 -- 4:13 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The defeat of drugs, prostitution and HIV/AIDS would require an effort from all political and social organisations combined with the personal responsibility of their leaders, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong said during a visit to Hai Phong on Dec. 19.

The National Drugs, Prostitution and HIV/AIDS Control and Prevention Committee Chairman said effective control of these vices and illnesses would play an important role in building sustainable development and ensuring the nation’s security.

The deputy prime minister praised Hai Phong’s administrators for their initial success in dealing with the problems.

But he urged them to extend information about their dangers to a wider public so that awareness would be gradually raised.

“This will be among the best of preventive measures against social vices,” he said.

An average of 110-130 people was detected with HIV/AIDS in Hai Phong between 2001 and 2005. This figure had fallen 20-30 as of last year.

But the number of HIV/AIDS patients receiving support and professional advice had risen, city officials report.

The deputy prime minister reminded Hai Phong policy makers to create more job opportunities for former drug users after their rehabilitation.

Earlier, he inspected two labour-education centres, one in inner Hai Phong and the other on its outskirt.

Drug addiction remains a scourge in Hai Phong despite the detection of numerous drug dens in the city.

In August, Hai Phong found that it had 5,351 drug addicts and 2,548 suspected drug users with HIV/AIDS patients in all its districts.

The city’s administrators plan to reduce the number of drug addicts by 20-30 percent and have 100 percent of schools drug free by 2010.-Enditem
