Garment and textile exports hit 7.8 billion USD

21/12/2007 -- 10:13 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The country earned 7.8 billion USD from garment and textiles exports in 2007, a year-on-year increase of 31 percent.

The US remained the largest market for Vietnamese garment and textiles, buying a total of 4.5 billion USD, an increase of 33 percent over 2006, despite its strict monitoring mechanism.

The EU countries and Japan were the second and the third largest importers of Vietnamese garment and textiles, respectively.

The Viet Nam Garment and Textiles Association attributed the achievements to all-out efforts by enterprises. Noteworthy were the Ha Noi Garment and Textiles Company, the Garment Company 10, the Viet Tien Garment Company and the Chien Thang Garment Company.

The association plans to obtain an export turnover of 9.5 billion USD in 2008, up 20 percent from this year.

To reach the target, President of the association Le Quoc An said that the sector should speed up projects to produce materials and accessories to lessen their dependence on imports thus cutting production cost. He also called for increased investment in designing to raise products’ competitiveness.

The sector should invest in training skilled workers and build a long-term development strategy to mitigate impacts from the US examination mechanism and maintain sustainable growth, An said.-Enditem
