08/01/2008 -- 9:30 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has requested all localities to reinforce preventive measures against bird flu as avian influenza virus still exist in fowls.

At a meeting of the National Steering Committee for Bird Flu in Ha Noi on January 8, the Veterinary Department reported that virus was found in 661 out of 15,000 samples tested most recently, or a rate of almost 5 percent.

Around 1.75 percent of waterfowls at markets and slaughterhouses in 25 provinces and cities were found to carry avian influenza virus, the department reported.

Minister Phat ordered the Mekong delta province of Tra Vinh and the northern province of Thai Nguyen, where bird flu reemerged recently, to strictly monitor work to contain the disease, including vaccination, disinfection and the ban on trade in the affected areas.

The Minister also asked veterinary officials to continue vaccinating newly-born poultry as vaccination has helped protect an average 66 percent of poultry according to reports from 41 provinces and localities.-Enditem
