EVN reservoirs to aid crop irrigation

15/01/2008 -- 11:59 AM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Electricity of Viet Nam’s (EVN) three reservoirs would discharge water for winter-spring crops irrigation within this week, said EVN’s National Dispatch Centre deputy director Ngo Son Hai in a meeting on Jan. 14.

The Tuyen Quang, Thac Ba and Hoa Binh hydro-power reservoirs will release their water in one week to help reduce water shortages in the northern province .

The EVN and the Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry’s Irrigation Department also agreed at the meeting to carry out two more discharges in early and mid February.

“It will be very difficult for the power system to operate during this time, and as the demand for power increases as water levels in hydro-power reservoirs get lower,” said Hai.

He said that the water levels at Thac Ba hydro-power reservoir and at Hoa Binh, currently the largest reservoir, at the beginning of the first discharge were much lower than during the same period last year. The water levels in Hoa Binh reservoir stood at 110.4m, a decrease of 3.6m against last year. In Thac Ba reservoir the water level was 2m lower.

“This is equivalent to 1.2 billion cu.m of water less, in both reservoirs, than last year.”

The Tuyen Quang hydro-power reservoir will only discharge a small amount of water, as it needs reserve water to run generators at the new Tuyen Quang hydro-power plant, which will be brought into operation in early March.

“Even the reserved power production in hydro-power reservoirs for this dry season is estimated to be 560 million kWh lower than it would be with normal water levels,” said Hai.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department estimated that if the water level was as low as was forecast, between 100,000 and 200,000 ha of crops would face water shortages.-Enditem
