Mercedes sees successful year in Viet Nam

Ha Noi (VNA) – Mercedes-Benz experienced a successful year in Viet Nam , with its total car sales increased by 90 percent over 2006 to 2,278 units last year, a company executive said on January 17.

The company sold 285 C-Class sedans last year, a 331 percent increase over 2006. Its C-Class manufacturing line which was put into operation in September 2007 has been required to run at full capacity to cater to the demand. Local consumers also bought 200 luxury E-class cars.

The company’s popular mini bus Sprinter remained a best-seller on the market, with 1,694 units being sold in the year, an increase of 88 percent over 2006.

The Viet Nam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA) had earlier reported that Viet Nam ’s top 16 car makers sold a total of 80,392 vehicles in 2007, the highest number since the first foreign car-maker came to the country 16 years ago, and almost reaching the Government’s 2010 target of 100,000.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade , Viet Nam currently has more than 40 car makers and more than 100 car-part makers with a total capacity of over 200,000 units per year.-Enditem
