“Clean” businesses explored in HCM City

22/01/2008 -- 1:02 PM

HCM City (VNA) – A trade mission from the UK Climate Change Projects Office began its 6-day mission here on January 21 to explore investment opportunities in “clean development”.

”The demand for a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, contributes to sustainable development, and results in the generation of tradable carbon credits under the Kyoto protocol, has grown significantly over the last year,” said a press release from the British Consulate General.

”This has been driven by demand from the EU Emissions Trading Scheme and carbon purchases by national governments to help them meet their Kyoto emission reduction targets.”

The UK trade mission is focusing on technology and finance for CDM projects during its stay in the city.

London is a world centre for emissions, trading and climate change project development and finance.

UK companies are looking for CDM projects to invest in and are considering Viet Nam as a potential area.

Those represented by the mission include legal advisors, project developers, investment fund managers, brokers and climate change service providers.

The UK Government considers climate change to be the greatest environmental challenge facing the world today and is taking a lead among developed countries in achieving the targets agreed in the Kyoto Protocol, the consulate said in a press release.-Enditem
