Quang Binh (VNA) – The People’s Committee of central Quang Binh province and three big economic groups on Jan. 26 held a ground-breaking ceremony for the second phase construction of Hon La port in Quang Trach district.

Total investment of 1.3 trillion for the second phase is funded by the Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), the Bank for Investment and Development of Viet Nam (BIDV) and the Truong Thinh Company.

Once completed in 2010, the port will be capable of accommodating 100,000 tonne vessels and handling 1.8 million tonnes of cargo each year. About 1.4 million tonnes of cement and minerals from Laos are expected to go through this port too.

The first phase of the port started in June, 2001, at a cost of 162 billion VND provided by the State budget and was completed at the end of 2007. It is now able to receive 10,000 tonne ships.

Apart from the construction of Hon La port at the second phase, Quang Binh province is speeding up the first stage of the construction of the 228ha Hon La Industrial zone next to Hon La port.

By the end of 2007, 21 projects registered to invest in the IZ, including the 1 billion USD Hon La thermo-electric power plant with a designed capacity of 1,200MW, a 1 trillion VND shipyard and the Nhat Le automobile assembling project.-Enditem
