Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam confirmed, on February 13, one more human bird flu death, bringing the total number of H5N1 fatalities to three since the beginning of this year.

Dr. Nguyen Huy Nga, Head of the Preventive Medicine Department of the Health Ministry, said the victim – a 40-year-old man in northern Hai Duong province – died on the afternoon of February 13 after four days of treatment at the National Hospital for Infectious and Tropical Diseases.

Nga also told the conference of the National Steering Committee for Human Bird Flu Prevention and Control that the victim was found to have cooked two dead fowls for his family.

The poor patient was hospitalised in critical condition, with two lungs’ damage and kidney failure, according to Dr. Hong Ha, Vice Director of the hospital.

Earlier this year, a four year old kid from northern mountainous Son La province and a 32 year old man from northern Tuyen Quang province were confirmed as the first and the second bird flu death cases of the year.

Viet Nam has so far reported 103 people infected with H5N1 bird flu virus since the first case was detected on December 26, 2003, of whom 49 had died.-Enditem
