Fishing boat reduction plan gets delay

15/02/2008 -- 11:38 AM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) has delayed a plan to reduce the number of fishing boats in the country for fear that it might leave too many people jobless.

The plan to reduce the fleet by 36,000 boats would be delayed until 2010, said Hoang Dinh Yen, deputy director of MARD’s Department of Fisheries Resource Exploitation and Protection.

The plan aims to reduce the amount of small fishing boats under 50 CV (Horse Power) to 50,000 by 2010. This, according to Deputy Minister Nguyen Viet Thang, will help tackle depleting marine resources and balance fishing fleets between coastal and offshore areas.
“We need to strengthen offshore fishing fleets because of foreign competition,” Thang said. “If we don’t get the fish, someone else will.”

Out of a total 90,000 vessels operating in coastal areas, around 80 percent of them are under 50 CV.-Enditem
