PM Dung’s visit to boost Viet Nam–UK bilateral ties

27/02/2008 -- 6:42 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Newly-appointed British Ambassador to Viet Nam Mark Kent said he believed that Vietnamese Prime Minister’s visit to the United Kingdom next week will serve as an excellent opportunity to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

The diplomat made the remark at a press conference in Ha Noi on February 27 regarding PM Nguyen Tan Dung’s UK visit, scheduled from March 4-5.

He said that the UK will focus on five areas in its cooperation with Viet Nam. Trade and investment relations, one of key areas for cooperation between the UK and Viet Nam have been increasingly growing. Two-way trade currently stood at 1.8 billion USD and the UK’s investment in the Southeast Asian nation was about 1.4 billion USD.

Ambassador Kent said he expected that the figures will increase following the visit and he hinted that several “impressive” contracts would be signed during the PM’s trip.

Regarding development assistance, he said Viet Nam is a success story and the UK has been actively cooperating with the country in this area.

The British Ambassador also underlined prioritised areas of foreign policy, education and immigration.-Enditem
