Bar association rejects US Appeal Court’s verdict

27/02/2008 -- 8:05 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The Viet Nam Bar Association has made a statement against the verdict of the US Appeal Court in New York that denied compensation for Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO) victims, calling it an “erroneous and unjust” decision.

The verdict ignored the fact that AO/dioxin chemicals sprayed by the US armed force during the Viet Nam war left serious consequences on the people and environment in Viet Nam , the statement said.

It is regrettable that the verdict was made at a time when the US government is making cooperation efforts with Viet Nam to solve the aftermaths caused by AO/dioxin”, it added.

The statement also stressed that dealing with AO/dioxin aftermaths is an urgent humanitarian task.

The war ended in Viet Nam for nearly 40 years, however, million of Vietnamese people, who are victims of AO/dioxin, still have to suffer from physical and mental pains night and day.

“The demand of Vietnamese AO victims is completely legitimate. We believe that the international community, including the US lawyer circle, will continue to stand by Vietnamese AO victims in the struggle for justice”, the statement said.-Enditem
