Int’l arrivals up 15 percent in two months

28/02/2008 -- 8:19 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) - Viet Nam welcomed more than 860,000 overseas tourists in the first two months of this year, an increase of 15 percent over the same period last year.

Tourists from China were up by 52.2 percent and Thailand by 34 percent. Tourists from Sweden and Finland, who have high purchase power, also increased by 60.8 percent and 46 percent respectively.

The surge has been attributed to campaigns promoting the National Mekong Tourist Year in Can Tho city and the Origin-looking back tourism programme in the northern provinces of Yen Bai and Phu Tho.

Luxury hotels in tourism-booming areas such as Ha Noi, Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang beach city in southern Khanh Hoa province report high occupancy rates up to more than 90 percent.

Demand for hotels of three star standard and upwards were sometimes higher than supply, hotel managers said.

Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh said the industry hopes to attract 5 million foreign tourists and serve 21 million domestic holiday makers to yield 64 trillion VND in 2008.

The target will also pave the way for the country to fulfill its 2010 programme one year in advance. The 2010 goal calls for between 5.5 and 6 million foreign tourists, 25 million domestic holiday makers and revenues up to 5 billion VND.

The industry also aims to employ 500,000 permanent workers and sideline occupations for 1.2-1.3 million others.--Enditem
