Ha Noi (VNA) – The US Appeal Court’s verdict, which is a follow-up of the lower court’s decision, is unjust and contrary to the miserable realities of the Vietnamese Agent Orange/dioxin victims, according to the Presidium of the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFFCC).
The US Appeal Court No. 2 in New York on February 22 ruled to uphold the lower court’s verdict to dismiss the Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims’ lawsuit against US chemical companies that provided Agent Orange/dioxin for the US army during the war in Viet Nam .
The Presidium of the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front on February 29 made the statement against the US Appeal Court ’s verdict.
The verdict is against the US government’s initial cooperation with Viet Nam to overcome the consequences of the Agent Orange/dioxin, the Presidium said.
They said it was an erroneous and unjust decision that is raising strong discontentment among the Vietnamese people and those with good sense in the world.
The VFFCC Presidium affirmed the lawsuit is the voice of judgment and human rights’ call for justice, not only for the life of the Vietnamese AO victims but also for US dioxin-infected war veterans who participated in the war in Viet Nam .
The VFFCC Presidium said the Vietnamese people call upon international organisations, governments, non-government organisations, scientists, jurists, social activists, people in the US and all over the world to continue exposing the truth and taking action to support the lawsuit of the Agent Orange victims.
The Presidium said they now hope the US Supreme Court will make a decision to force the US chemical companies to take responsibility and provide satisfactory compensation for victims.
Scientific analysis and evidence has proved that around 80 million litres of dioxin, an extremely toxic chemical for humans and the environment, was sprayed over southern Viet Nam by US troops during the war and has caused serious impacts on the health and life of victims and their descendants, including US war veterans and others who participated in the Viet Nam war.
Although the State and people of Viet Nam have made every effort to overcome the consequences for the AO victims, desired results have not yet been seen.
The US government provides billions of US dollars for US Agent Orange victims each year.-Enditem
