01/03/2008 -- 10:04 PM

London (VNA) – UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs David Miliband has said he sees a bright future for the relationship between the UK and Viet Nam.

Foreign Secretary Miliband made the remark on the occasion of the UK official visit by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung scheduled for March 4-6, which is made simultaneously with the 35 th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries.

“This visit is a clear indication of the deepening of our bilateral relationship,” Foreign Secretary Miliband told a Viet Nam News Agency correspondent in an exclusive interview.

According to the UK Foreign Secretary, development cooperation will be a major part of the Viet Nam-UK relationship. The UK will be contributing over 250 million pounds in aid to Viet Nam between 2006 and 2011, which makes the UK the second largest donor of grant aid to Viet Nam.

The UK diplomat added that with Viet Nam’s recent election to the United Nations Security Councial, the UK and Viet Nam are now working closely on a range on international issues which are central to international peace and security.

“And we will strengthen our dialogue on other issues, such as human rights, which is important not only to our shared international commitments, but also to Viet Nam’s own long-term development,” he said.- Enditem
