PM asks Son La to prioritise poverty reduction

Son La (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on March 1 asked the northern mountainous province of Son La to give priority to economic restructuring and poverty reduction. The PM made the request while working with key officials from the province where the rate of poor households remains high, registering at 37 percent. He suggested that Son La accelerate afforestation along with animal husbandry and provide technical and financial supports for maize cultivation and cattle rearing. The government leader also asked local authorities in collaboration with the investor of the Son La hydro-electric power plant to speed up the resettlement for inhabitants displaced by the power plant construction to ensure it is carried out as scheduled. The province must consider the resettlement its key task to ensure the first turbine of the Son La power plant begins its operation by 2010 and all turbines run two years later, the PM said. He spoke highly of the achievements made by Son La province, including an economic growth rate of 15.38 percent in 2007.-Enditem
