Legislator calls for more investment from Russia

03/03/2008 -- 5:40 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – A leading legislator has called on Russia to increase its investment in oil and gas, energy and machinery manufacturing in Viet Nam.

National Assembly Deputy Chairman Uong Chu Luu made the appeal while receiving Russia’s Federation Council Deputy Chairman Mikhail Nikolaev Efimovich on March 3.

Efimovich was accompanied by representatives from 50 Russian businesses visiting Viet Nam from March 2-5.

Deputy Chairman Luu said that while the Viet Nam-Russia strategic partnership has been strengthened, the economic, trade and investment relations between the two countries have failed to reach their potential.

Russia currently ranks 24th among 78 foreign investors in Viet Nam.

The visiting deputy chairman said his council was working to foster bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation and boost economic, trade and investment ties with foreign countries.

He said that because Russia is partly located in Asia, it places importance in developing ties with Asian nations, especially Southeast Asia which is a region of growing opportunities.

On the same day, the visiting deputy chairman and the business group met with leaders from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Viet Nam Union of Friendship Organisations.-Enditem
