US Assistant Secretary of State visits Viet Nam

Ha Noi (VNA) – US Assistant Secretary of State Christopher Hill visited Viet Nam on March 2-3 to find ways to scale-up the two countries’ relationship.

Hill met the National Assembly’s Committee for External Relations Chairman, Nguyen Van Son, and the Party Central Committee’s External Relations Commission Deputy Head Ta Minh Chau. He and his entourage also held talks with Deputy Foreign Minister Dao Viet Trung.

At the meetings, Hill said the US valued Viet Nam ’s economic achievements and that it continues to place importance on its relationship with Viet Nam .

The US officials pledged to work with Viet Nam in a bid to further the two countries’ multi-faceted, stable and long-term cooperation.

They also spoke highly of the important role Viet Nam is playing in Southeast Asia and as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

They expressed thanks to the Vietnamese people and Government for cooperation in solving the MIA issue.

The Vietnamese side lauded the US ’s efforts in boosting the two countries’ multi-faceted relations and asserted that Viet Nam treasures its ties with the US .

They said the two countries need bilateral ties to grow in a strong and stable manner in line with the Viet Nam-US joint statements, issued in May 2005 and November 2006, for the benefit of the people of both countries and throughout the region.

The Vietnamese side thanked the US people and Government for giving humanitarian aid to the Vietnamese people to help overcome consequences of natural calamities.

They said they hoped the US will boost cooperation with Viet Nam in settling the aftermath left by war.

The Vietnamese and US officials also exchanged views on world and regional issues of mutual concern.-Enditem
