Viet Nam active in UN Security Council

Ha Noi (VNA) – Viet Nam has contributed actively and constructively to the United Nations Security Council, giving its position in all issues discussed by the body, a Ministry of Foreign Affairs official has said.

According to the Ministry’s Department of International Organisations Head Le Hoai Trung, Viet Nam ’s activities at the council have been implemented in a synchronous and timely manner.

He says it has been meeting its objectives and showing its policies of independence, sovereignty, openness, diversification and multilateralisation.

Since Viet Nam participated in the council’s first activity in early January, it has joined 30 ambassador-level meetings to discuss international issues, Trung said.

Viet Nam has voted for Resolution 1799 extending the embargo on the Democratic Republic of Congo and Resolution 1800 allowing the Secretary-General to appoint additional judges for the International Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia , he said.

It has also voted for Resolution 1801 extending the authorisation of the African Union mission in Somalia .

The Security Council is scheduled to discuss nine issues in March, including the nuclear issue in Iran , anti-terrorism, a report of the Sudan Sanctions Committee and a report on executing Resolution 1701 on resolving the Lebanon-Israel conflict.-Enditem
