Can Tho (VNA) – With assistance form the Ministry of Transport, provinces in the Mekong delta have been carrying out projects worth 248 million USD to upgrade ports in the region.

Those projects were aimed at raising each port’s capacity to receive ship from 3,000-5,000 tonnes upwards and handling about 13 million tonnes of goods a year.

Four wharfs in Cai Cui port in Can Tho City have been under construction to receive ships of 20,000 tonnes and 2.5 million tonnes of goods a year. The port’s first wharf was completed and the remaining ones are expected to be operational by 2010.

The upgrade of Hoang Dieu and Tra Noc ports were completed, while a sea route linking the Hau river to Dinh An sea gate is going to be put into operation to serve ships from 10,000-20,000 tonnes.
