Viet Nam supports East African conflict resolution

06/03/2008 -- 6:17 PM

New York (VNA) – A Vietnamese diplomat says Viet Nam supports regional and international efforts to peacefully settle conflicts in East Africa .

Vietnamese deputy representative to the United Nations Security Council Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung made the statement at a consultation meeting in New York on March 5.

At the meeting, UN Assistant Secretary General for political affairs Haile Menkerios made a briefing on the situation in Somalia and Kenya.

Menkerios said the situation in Somalia has worsened, especially after conflicts between government forces and Islamic fighters in Mogadishu killed and injured innocent civilians.

The meeting also heard there is political instability and violence in Kenya, despite the fact the Kenyan government and opposition signed a power sharing agreement on February 28.

Vietnamese diplomat Trung said the UN and its Security Council should continue helping the two nations resolve their crises and current social and political issues.

He expressed his deep concern about the humanitarian and security crisis in Somalia, and the conflict and political tension in Kenya . He called on concerned parties to help stop the violence and assist in political and national reconciliation, and find comprehensive and long-term solutions.-Enditem
