RoK supports Ha Long Bay amongst wonders

06/03/2008 -- 10:28 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The Republic of Korea Embassy will do all it can to promote Viet Nam’s Ha Long Bay and encourage RoK people to vote the UNESCO-recognised world natural heritage site as one of seven new world wonders.

RoK Ambassador Im Hong-jae gave the commitment at an inauguration ceremony of an exhibition on Ha Long Bay in Ha Noi on March 6.

The Ambassador expressed his pleasure to join the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST) in a campaign to promote Ha Long Bay with assistance from the RoK’s Kumho Asiana Group.

He said the bay is a pride of the Vietnamese people and the RoK is willing to share the pride with Viet Nam . He also called for a strong, uninterrupted and long-lasting effort to maintain the bay’s first place in the voting.

On the occasion, MCST Minister Hoang Tuan Anh asked everybody, Vietnamese citizens and foreigners, who love Ha Long, to vote for the bay.

On February 16, the RoK Embassy in Viet Nam put a banner on its Vietnamese language website at www.hanquocngaynay.com to promote Ha Long Bay and started guiding Internet users to join the voting for Ha Long Bay.

Ha Long Bay, whose name means “Descending Dragon”, has twice been recognised by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site.

Covering over 430 sq. km, the bay is dotted with nearly 800 limestone islands that rise spectacularly from the sea, and is renowned for diverse geographical features such as a unique system of caves that were formed by the encroaching water.

Geographical attractions aside, Ha Long Bay is home to a diverse ecological system that includes mangrove forests, tropical forests and coral reefs that are inhabited by more than 1,000 species of fish and marine animals.

The islands are also home to many species of birds, bantams, antelopes, monkeys and iguanas.

At present, Ha Long Bay is leading the voting for seven new world wonders on the Website www.new7wonders.com launched by the NewOpenWorld.

Two other beauty spots of Viet Nam , namely the Phong Nha-Ke Bang grotto and the Fansipan mountain, were also among the seven top favourites.

All the three sites of Viet Nam have always stood in the top-ten list of the voting among over 200 candidates from all parts of the world since the first phase of the voting kicked off in August 2007.

The first phase will close in August 8, 2008 to pick out 77 best favourites.

The second phase will take between six and seven months to select 21 sites of the most votes and the third and final phase will name the best seven among the 21 candidates.-Enditem
