Wrecked ship’s oil spreads

07/03/2008 -- 6:23 PM

Ba Ria-Vung Tau (VNA) - Despite efforts from hundreds of locals and authorities, oil from a sunken ship has leaked and spread across southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province’s coastal area.

The oil has spread across the sea’s waters and beaches with dense coverage in some areas, according to reports on the morning of March 7.

Border guard station No.492 Chief Nguyen Ngoc Dung said darkness and high waves stopped oil clearance efforts in the late evening on March 6. They had collected around 1 tonne of the pollutant before they had to crease operations.

The Duc Tri BWEG vessel carrying 1,700 tonnes of oil reportedly sank in local waters on March 2. It was en route from Ho Chi Minh City to central Da Nang city.

Two teams of rescues are set to dive into the wreckage to search for bodies of 14 victims and pump oil out from its holds.-Enditem
