Ha Noi (VNA) - UN Ambassadors from Ireland and Tanzania have praised the implementation of UN reform in Viet Nam, underlining that they were greatly encouraged by the strong leadership shown by the Vietnamese Government.
The two ambassadors, currently serving as Co-Chairs to the United Nations General Assembly consultation on system-wide coherence, are in Viet Nam from March 9-11 to assess the country’s development of “One UN” - a policy that aims to bring UN agencies under one system of management and administration.
Ambassador Paul Kavanagh, UN Permanent Representative of Ireland, said Viet Nam is leading the way in its cooperation with the UN.
“ Viet Nam is a highly respected member of the UN, and is a pioneer of UN reform,” he said.
“The Vietnamese Government has exhibited leadership in this area even before the High Level Panel Report on System-wide Coherence was published.
“We are delighted to come here to gain their perspective on the progress made so far and the challenges which remain.
“Their (government’s) views and those of the other pilot countries will provide extremely valuable insight into the process, which we hope to share with the broader UN membership of the General Assembly in our discussion on ‘Delivering as One’ on March 28.”
Meanwhile, Ambassador Augustine Mahiga, UN Permanent Representative of Tanzania said the new era of change is exciting for the UN and Viet Nam.
“The UN has been a trusted partner of the Vietnamese Government for many years,” he said.
“This is an exciting time of transition, not only for the UN in Viet Nam , but for Viet Nam as a whole, as it prepares to become a middle-income country.
“We hope that this reform process will assist the UN agencies, funds and programmes to continue to be important partners of the Vietnamese Government, accompanying Viet Nam in this new and exciting phase.” Viet Nam is the last stop in the Co-Chairs’ mission to “One UN” pilot countries including Tanzania, Cape Verde and Mozambique.
During their stay in Viet Nam, the ambassadors met with State President Nguyen Minh Triet and ministries officials.
The UN ambassadors expressed their positive impressions of the country and its people, as well as socio-economic achievements gained in recent years.-Enditem
