New York (VNA) – A Vietnamese representative to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on March 11 stressed that the Darfur conflict can only be resolved by a comprehensive political solution.
At the UNSC Consultation on the deployment of the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in New York on March 11, Ambassador Le Luong Minh, Viet Nam’s representative at the UNSC, reiterated Viet Nam ’s stance that the current security and humanitarian crisis in Darfur cannot be detached from tension in Sudan-Chad relations. “There cannot be a lasting solution to the Darfur conflict should Sudan and Chad fail to normalize their relations and defuse the outstanding questions between them,” he said.
In that connection, Viet Nam welcomed the upcoming signing of a peace accord between Sudan and Chad in Dakar, Senegal, the ambassador said.
Minh appreciated the efforts of UNAMID, especially in helping the return of refugees. and reaffirmed Viet Nam’s support for an early and full deployment of UNAMID in light of the security situation and humanitarian crisis in Darfur .
He went on to say that Viet Nam welcomes the signing of the status of force agreement (SOFA) between the Sudanese Government and the UN, and urged the related parties to cooperate further for the early and full deployment of UNAMID.
“Viet Nam takes note of the recent establishment of the ‘Friends of UNAMID’ groups and hopes that it will play a pro-active role in facilitating the full deployment of UNAMID in close consultation with the Government of the Sudan,” the ambassador added.
He called on all the parties concerned to seek a negotiated solution in the interest of the people of the Sudan, especially the population of Darfur, and the rebel groups to renounce violence and join the Government of the Sudan in the political process.-Enditem
