Oil spill continues polluting southern coasts

13/03/2008 -- 6:14 PM

Ba Ria-Vung Tau (VNA) - Staff from southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province tourist sites are on round-the-clock duty to prevent oil from last week’s spill washing onto beach sand.

On the morning of March 13, oil had reportedly spread to the entire backyard of the Vung Tau beach resort.

Resort staff and local administration cleared the oil, collecting almost 3 tonnes of oil mixed with sand from the Vung Tau Intourco resort and 4 tonnes from the Paradise area.

Although beaches are almost clean, water surface close to the coast is still covered with a thin layer of oil.

The National Search and Rescue Committee held a meeting with rescue units, local authorities and border guards from Binh Chau village, Xuyen Moc district of Ba Ria-Vung Tau province to discuss measures to pump oil from the wreckage and lift the sunken Duc Tri oil tanker.

They have decided to begin pumping oil on March 14.-Enditem
