OIE to donate 20 million doses of bird flu vaccine

14/03/2008 -- 9:03 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has pledged to give Viet Nam 20 million doses of avian influenza vaccine with supplies expected to arrive next week.

OIE Director General Bernard Vallat announced the donation at a ceremony where he was presented with Viet Nam ’s insignia for “the cause of agriculture development” in Ha Noi on March 14.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat spoke highly of the OIE’s cooperation on a number of projects, including practical recommendations and expertise in the fight against epidemics, especially bird flu.

“ Viet Nam ’s initial successes in the fight against bird flu are attributed not only to the government’s high resolve, but also to close cooperation with OIE,” Minister Phat said.

Viet Nam was the first country in the world to ask OIE to assess its animal husbandry sector independently and publicise its assessment. By 2006, 60 countries have followed the same suit.

At the ceremony, the OIE said they were ready to help Viet Nam combat rabies in dogs.-Enditem
