Ha Noi (VNA) – An official from northern Ha Nam province has confirmed a boy in Thanh Liem district has died from avian influenza.
According to the province’s Health Service Director Nguyen Lap Quyet, the 11-year-old boy from Liem Tiet commune died on March 14. He was hospitalised on March 8 after eating chickens from his family’s stock where some fowls had died several days before.
Liem Tiet commune had a 28-year-old woman die from H5N1 in June last year.
At present, Viet Nam has 11 provinces infected by bird flu. Central Quang Nam and Quang Binh provinces and northern Lao Cai province are the most recent to report the disease.
During the past month, Quang Nam province has had more than 8,000 ducks in nine districts die, however, they only culled the suspected poultry and did not run tests immediately.
When four samples taken from a 300-fowl suspected flock in Thang Binh district tested positive with the H5N1 virus, the province stepped up its campaign to prevent the disease spreading.
In Quang Binh province, 75 ducks from a 300-head flock in Le Thuy district die between March 10-14.
Following the death of poultry in Lao Cai province in early March, two samples taken from flocks Bao Thang and Muong Khuong districts tested positive to avian influenza.
Provinces that have not passed the 21-day bird-flu-free mark include Ninh Binh, Phu Tho, Ha Nam , Tuyen Quang provinces and Ha Noi in the north, Quang Tri province in the centre, and Vinh Long and Soc Trang provinces in the south.-Enditem
