Women reject US Court’s verdict on AO victims

18/03/2008 -- 6:28 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – The Presidium of the Viet Nam Women’s Union have voiced their protest against the US Appeal Court’s verdict to dismiss Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims’ lawsuit against US chemical companies.

The US Appeal Court in New York on February 22 upheld a US Court ’s decision to dismiss a class-suit action against the companies that supplied AO/dioxin to the US armed forces during the American-Viet Nam war.

“This is a groundless and unjust verdict which is contrary to the reality of the consequences of Agent Orange/dioxin chemicals on Vietnamese victims,” the Presidium said in a recent statement.

“The verdict denies the fact the toxic AO/dioxin sprayed by US troops during the war in Viet Nam has seriously impacted not only on Vietnamese people’s health and the environment but also on US war veterans and other troops that participated in the war,” it said.

“All verdicts allowing US chemical firms to deny their responsibility for human history and victims have gone against laws, ethics and moral standards.”

The Presidium also called for worldwide support to Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims and those from other countries.

Scientific evidence shows that around 80 million litres of dioxin, an extremely toxic chemical for humans and the environment, was sprayed over southern Viet Nam by US troops during the American-Viet Nam war. The dioxin has had serious impacts on the health and lives of those exposed to the dioxin, and their descendants.-Enditem
