Localities urged to take action against bird flu

18/03/2008 -- 10:20 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Provinces and centrally-run cities nationwide should put measures in place to detect new bird flu outbreaks and treat them in the most effective way.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat made the request at a meeting held by the National Steering Board for Bird Flu Control in Ha Noi on March 18.
Localities need to encourage people to cooperate with functional agencies in implementing epidemic prevention measures, Phat said.

He also suggested the Ministry of Finance provide financial support to assist those who have to cull their fowls.

In addition to asking companies to speed up the import of vaccines, Phat asked localities to prepare for mass vaccinations that will start in April this year.

The minister also instructed establishment of working teams to direct bird flu prevention work in localities until the end of this month.

Since early this year, bird flu outbreaks have been reported in 17 localities nationwide and have to date claimed five lives.-Enditem
