US Appeal Court ignores facts in Viet Nam

19/03/2008 -- 9:05 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – A US lawyer says the US Appeal Court’s verdict to dismiss Vietnamese Agent Orange (AO)/dioxin victims’ lawsuit against US chemical companies shows the court ignored the facts in Viet Nam.

Speaking with Viet Nam News Agency during a visit to Viet Nam from March 18-22, US Lawyer Jonathan C Moore said the court focused on herbicide, not herbicide with poison, sprayed by US troops during the war in Viet Nam.

“They thought we were complaining just about herbicide and not about herbicides that contain poison,” Moore said.

Scientific evidence shows that around 80 million litres of dioxin, an extremely toxic chemical for humans and the environment, was sprayed over southern Viet Nam by US troops during the American-Viet Nam war.

International Association of Democratic Lawyers President Jitendra Sharma also agrees with Moore.

Sharma says the US court’s dismissal of the appeal of Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims was not based on law and facts, adding that the Viet Nam Association of Victims of Agent Orange/dioxin (VAVA) should call on public support as well as continue to pursue the lawsuit against US chemicals companies.

Vietnamese AO/dioxin victims have sent a petition hearing to the US appeal court and if they refuse, “we will bring the case to the US supreme court,” Moore said.

VAVA has recently announced that association members have no choice but keep struggling for justice.-Enditem
