24/03/2008 -- 7:36 PM

Hanoi (VNA) –The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology inaugurated new bio-safety laboratories in Hanoi on March 24.

The Biosafety Level-3 laboratories are part of a 7.8 million USD non-refundable project of the Japanese government.

The project aims to control and prevent infectious diseases in Vietnam and the region, including severe accurate respiratory syndrome (SARS), tuberculosis and bird flu, as well as human Type A flu.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology Director Dr Nguyen Tran Hien said the labs will help improve the capacity of Vietnam’s preventative medical system in the control of emerging and recurring dangerous infectious diseases.

Japanese Ambassador to Vietnam Sakaba Mitsuo said he hoped that with the project, the Institute would become a central research institute of the region.

Medicine has been a focal area in Japan’s cooperation programs with Vietnam . Japan has helped Vietnam upgrade the central hospitals of Bach Mai, Cho Ray and Hue, as well as provided the country with polio vaccines and helped build a measles vaccine production system.-Enditem
