EU believes in future trade ties with Vietnam

26/03/2008 -- 10:16 PM

Ha Noi (VNA) – Trade is one of areas of future cooperation between the European Union (EU) and Vietnam because the two economies are complementary, said Ambassador Marjan Cencen of Slovenia, which currently holds EU presidency.

“This maybe a good opportunity because both sides are searching for new markets and in that sense, we can achieve higher trade exchange,” Ambassador Cencen, who is responsible for Vietnam and China, told Vietnamese journalists in Hanoi on March 26.

Two-way trade rose in recent years from 3.6 billion USD in 1999 to over 10 billion USD in 2006 and about 12 billion USD in 2007. The two sides agreed to increase two-way trade to 23 billion USD by 2010.

Vietnam is a new successful country in the region and the EU is looking forward into not just economic but also political, cultural and educational cooperation, Ambassador Cencen said.

According to the Ambassador, exchange of high-level visits is one way to learn about each other. The EU will organise a film week in Vietnam this year to introduce cultures of EU members, contributing to promoting EU images in Vietnam, he said.

“The future cooperation is very optimistic,” Ambassador Cencen stressed.-Enditem
