New York (VNA) – A Vietnamese diplomat has lauded progresses made by Guinea-Bissau in maintaining political stability and reforming law, while stressing that the West African country needs to hold election on schedule and reduce poverty.
Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung, Deputy Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations Security Council, made the statement during a council debate on the situation in Guinea-Bissau , which took place in New York on March 26.
He also suggested that Guinea-Bissau place importance on ensuring food security, developing healthcare and education, conducting disarmament, and controlling drug trafficking and organised crimes.
The diplomat stressed the roles of the Peace-building Commission as well as foundations, programmes and groups of the UN, the European Union and the Economic Community of West African States in helping Guinea-Bissau accelerate sustainable development, promote internal strength and boost international integration.
During the debate, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Guinea-Bissau Shola Omeregie acknowledged the efforts made by the African country’ Government in pushing up the peace building process and pointed out political, security, socio-economic and humanitarian difficulties facing the nation.
The UN Security Council affirmed its support for peace-building efforts in Guinea-Bissau . It applauded Guinea-Bissau President Joao Bernardo Vieira’s announcement to hold parliamentary election in November 16 and called on the West African country’s Government to accelerate preparations for the upcoming election.-Enditem
