PM: No price rise for strategic goods till June

27/03/2008 -- 11:37 PM

Hanoi (VNA) – The Prime Minister instructed that from now till June, no increases are allowed in prices of essential goods such as tickets of railway, air and bus services, safe water supply, cement, coal, electricity, petrol, medicine, tuitions and hospital fees.
At a meeting between the Government standing board and relevant ministries and the national financial and monetary policy consultative council on March 27, PM Nguyen Tan Dung stressed the government’s top priority of controlling inflation. He urged ministries and localities to take synchronous measures, focusing on controlling import surplus, promoting exports and ensuring the supply of essential commodities.
Along this line, the PM instructed the Ministry of Industry and Trade to speed up the construction of electric, fertiliser, steel and mechanical projects in order to soon manufacture products to replace imports.

The Finance Ministry was asked to coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to revise import taxes while the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development was instructed to recommend farmers to use domestically-produced fertilisers in a bid to reduce imports.

The PM also required ministries and agencies to tighten price control, particularly prevent speculation and smuggling to ensure stable prices of essential goods.

He called upon the public to practice thrift, especially State-run establishments to reduce their utilisation of power and petroleum.-Enditem
