Vietnam calls on Nepalese parties to refrain from violence

28/03/2008 -- 11:50 AM

New York (VNA) – Vietnam called on concerned parties in Nepal to refrain themselves from violence and strictly abide by the agreed election code of conduct during the resurgence of violence in this country.

Vietnamese permanent representative to the United Nations Security Council Le Luong Minh made the call when addressing the Council’s March 27 consultation meeting on the current situation in Nepal at a time when the country is to hold the Constituent Assembly election on April 10.

Minh noted that the overall security situation in Nepal has improved remarkably since the political parties in the country signed agreements on the implementation of peace process. He, however, expressed concerns about the resurgence of violence which could threat to disrupt the election process.
The ambassador lauded the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN)’s efforts in supervising and aiding preparatory work of the election and called on the force to continue working closely with the Nepalese government in accordance with its mandate on the basis of the principle of respect for the political independence and sovereignty of Nepal as well as its ownership of the implementation of the peace agreements.

The representative expressed hopes that the Nepalese government, with the support of the UN and the international community, will be able to bring the country out of decades-long conflict and steer it toward long-term stability.-Enditem
