Catfish swim to top of seminar agenda

28/03/2008 -- 4:50 PM

Can Tho (VNA) – Tra and basa catfish farmers must abide by environment protection laws and protect consumers’ health by scientifically raising and storing fish.

That was the agreement of participants at a seminar “Dialogue on tra and basa catfish aquaculture” in the Mekong Delta’s Can Tho city on March 27-28.

Focusing on the sustainable development of tra and basa catfish aquaculture, the forum outlined standards that meet demands from Europe and the US , Vietnam ’s two major markets for the product.

Vietnamese tra and basa catfish, mostly fillets, have been exported to more than 80 countries worldwide. In 2007, Vietnam earned 1 billion USD from the catfish with more than 50 percent to countries in the European Union.

The seminar was held by the Can Tho University and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).-Enditem
