Vietnam moves to give 5-in-1 vaccines by 2009

31/03/2008 -- 9:15 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - The National Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI) wants children under 5 to be protected from known child diseases with a five-in-one vaccine available from 2009.

EPI told the press on March 31 it has asked the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI) to provide assistance in supplying a free five-in-one vaccine.

Currently, parents have to pay to immunize their child with a vaccine combining polio, whooping cough, tetanus, Hepatitis B and Haemophilus Influenzae type B (Hib) in one shot.

Vietnam now has an estimated 1.5 million children in an EPI program that provides free three-in-one vaccines against polio, whooping cough and tetanus and hepatitis B vaccinations.-Enditem
