01/04/2008 -- 11:37 AM

Hanoi (VNA)- Forest product earnings increased by 0.4 percent year on year in the first quarter of 2008 and forest cover was up by 0.2 percent, reported the General Statistics Office.

As a result, forests produced 484,200 cu.m. of timbers from legal loggings and 6.6 million ste of fire-woods, representing respective increases of 0.6 and 0.8 percent, over the same period last year.

The work of rangers has been effective in reducing the areas damaged by wildfires, which is down to 275 ha of forests or 70 percent down year on year. This is despite long dry spells in the Mekong Delta, the Central Highlands and southeastern region.--Enditem
