Mekong commission meets on environmental issues

Danang (VNA) - Environmental and ecological issues were high on the agenda when the Mekong River Commission (MRC)’s Joint Committee opened its annual meeting in Danang city on April 2.

The two-day meeting is focusing on the MRC’s 10 environment and ecology programs for 2006-10, including flood mitigation, river development, aquaculture, environmental impacts of hydro-electricity, and water source management and use projects.

Topics slated for discussion include environmental protection through water use, water standards and cross-border environmental impact evaluations as well as international aid and operation budgets.

The previous meeting witnessed the signing of aid worth 4.4 million USD between donors and the commission.

The event has drawn representatives from the four MRC countries – Laos , Cambodia , Thailand and Vietnam – along with observer Myanmar and international donors and organisations including the Asian Development Bank, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Worldwide Fund for Nature.-Enditem
