Vietnam launches response to Global Earth Year

04/04/2008 -- 7:40 PM

Hanoi (VNA) - In response to an international call for the protection of the earth, Vietnam ’s Global Earth Year Steering Board has launched an extensive programme focusing on scientific research and raising public awareness.

Deputy Minister of Nature and Environment Nguyen Cong Thanh, who doubles as Head of the Steering Board of the Global Earth Year, said scientific research will cover 10 issues, including underground water, natural calamities, earth and human health, climate and sustainable use of natural resources.

Other issues for research are super-metropolis, oceans, earth layers and relations between the earth and life.

Campaigns to raise public awareness will be conducted by distributing leaflets and uploading information in various languages to dedicated websites.

Human beings are blamed for exploiting natural resources and in turn contributing to environment degradation and pollution.

Vietnam was among the 67 countries to have already established a national committee for the Global Earth Year. The committee is important for a country which has not yet tapped their rich natural resources in efficient ways.

The Southeast Asian nation has signed Memorandum of Understandings with Japan and the Republic of Korea to cooperate in implementing their relevant national programmes.

Both the MoUs call on signatories to increase exchanges of information on relevant programmes as well as coordinate visits, especially by youths and students, to strengthen public participation in joint events.--Enditem
