07/04/2008 -- 8:17 PM

Binh Duong (VNA) – A flora and bamboo ecological reserve was inaugurated in Ben Cat district, southern Binh Duong province, on April 7, the first of its kind in Vietnam and the Southeast Asian region.

The Phu An reserve was built with an investment capital of nearly 720,000 Euros under an international cooperation project between Binh Duong province, Rhone Alpes region and Pilat Natural Park of France and the College of Natural Sciences under the Ho Chi Minh City National University .

The project is aimed at preserving bamboo and rare flora in the Southeastern region, as well as building Phu An commune into an ecological preservation centre.

The reserve, also known as Phu An Bamboo Village, is currently home to more than 300 kinds of bamboo and many species of rare flora. Particularly, it has discovered two kinds of bamboo which are able to absorb metal in land, helping to reduce land pollution.

The reserve will also serve as a laboratory for students and scientists.-Enditem
