Northern region likely to face droughts

08/04/2008 -- 11:01 AM

Hanoi (VNA) – Droughts are expected in northern provinces from now until June due to a rainfall lower than the average of recent years, according to the Central Hydrometeorology Centre’s forecast.

The centre said the water level of main rivers in the north such as Da, Thao and Lo rivers is now 15-30 percent lower than the same time last year. Water level of the Hong River in Ha Noi has been reduced to about 1.5 m below the average level of many previous years. There has been rain in large areas in the north since early March, but it was very light.

The Central Hydrometeorology Centre warned that serious water shortage will likely affect rice planting on 100,000-200,000 ha of agricultural land, mainly in Phu Tho, Bac Giang, Vinh Phuc, Ha Tay, Hung Yen and Hai Duong.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has urged northern provinces to reserve and save water, and dredge canals to make full use of rainwater.

The ministry also asked localities to consider replacing crops in areas affected by droughts in order to reduce possible loss to farmers.-Enditem
